ORANGES
As an intern at New Rivers Press, I had the opportunity to design the book cover and interior layout for Oranges by Gary Elden Peter. This project challenged me to create a visual narrative that reflected the novel’s central themes and emotional depth. My design work on Oranges was recognized with a Silver ADDY Award in 2019, highlighting its impact and craftsmanship.

Problem :
To visually represent the book’s coming-of-age themes and life lessons, I developed a concept-driven cover design that used close-up imagery to symbolize key moments in the protagonist’s journey. I approached the project with a focus on:
Symbolic Photography: Personally capturing zoomed-in images of objects tied to significant events in the book, allowing the cover to subtly reveal the character’s growth.
Minimalist Yet Evocative Design: Letting the imagery and typography work together to create an intimate, thought-provoking feel.
Interior Layout & Readability: Ensuring the book’s typography, spacing, and layout choices enhanced the reader’s experience while maintaining New Rivers Press’s publishing standards.

Solution :
Cover Design: A photo-driven approach, where each image tied into a lesson learned by the protagonist, creating an abstract yet deeply connected visual theme.
Interior Book Layout: Carefully formatted typography, margins, and spacing for optimal readability while reinforcing the overall design aesthetic.
Award-Winning Execution: The final design was recognized with a Silver ADDY Award in 2019, underscoring its creativity, originality, and execution.

Challenge :
Designing the cover and interior layout for Oranges presented a unique creative challenge: to visually convey the emotional depth and introspective tone of Gary Elden Peter’s coming-of-age narrative without relying on literal or overly illustrative elements. The story unfolds through quiet, personal moments—so the design needed to evoke reflection, warmth, and growth in a subtle yet powerful way.
As a student designer interning at New Rivers Press, I also had to balance creative expression with professional publishing standards—ensuring the design was both visually striking and functional for print production. The challenge lay in creating a visual identity that would resonate with readers, complement the author’s voice, and stand out within a competitive literary market.
Summary :
Successfully captured the emotional essence of the novel, creating a cover that resonated with readers and complemented the storytelling.
Provided New Rivers Press with a high-quality, concept-driven book design that stood out in the literary market.
Earned industry recognition, receiving a Silver ADDY Award, validating the strength of the design.
This project combined photography, design, and storytelling, demonstrating my ability to create compelling visuals that enhance the reader’s connection to a book’s themes.
